![]() Topic: Leg Length DifferencePosted: 01 Sep 2010 at 9:10pm |

Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping some of you may be able to share your experiences of dealing with leg length difference. Our daughter's leg length difference has increased so she now has adjustments to her shoes rather than heel lifts inside the shoe. I've asked if the discrepancy will increase more as she grows or not and have been told 'may be, may be not'. We see an Orthotist at the local hospital. What have other people's experiences been? Should I expect this to increase/decrease? When would you see an Orthopaed doctor about a difference? And can you 'estimate' the final difference when fully grown?
Thanks
Jill

Hello! Unfortunately I can't answer any of your questions but wanted to add that my daughter's leg measurements have also shown there to be an increase in discrepancy; her right leg has always been smaller and thinner than her left but the first time the orthotist saw her the difference was 15mm and the second time (only just over 6 months later) it was 20mm- a bit alarming. Fortunatlely, the next time she was measured, it was again about 21mm difference. Emma (will be 3yrs in September) has always worn a shoe raise since learning to walk - the orthotist confirmed it was necessary not only to help her walk confidently as well as to prevent spinal problems, but also to help strengthen her right leg and in the long term perhaps even reduce the discrepancy - though obviously the last reason has not come to pass (yet?)
I hope you receive some light on the subject - and I will be very interested to hear what others say too! Best wishes, Sophie |

Sophie and Matthew,
Thanks both for your replies, they are helpful. It's reassuring to know that potentially the difference may reduce a little and interesting to hear how the difference affects you now Matthew. Hopefully if we continue with the Orthotics then she won't experience much discomfort in the future.
Thanks again
Jill
